Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a good client/designer match?
One obvious consideration is aesthetics — choose a designer whose point of view resonates. Peruse our portfolio and follow us on social for visuals of our work. Beyond style, partner with a designer whose process you understand and trust. Connect with us to schedule a complimentary call and learn all about ours. Our proprietary method serves as a roadmap, allowing us to spend our energy on bringing magic to your spaces and eliminating client anxiety about next steps, budget and logistics.
What defines a Courtney B. Smith Design space?
Our signature style is layered, vibrant, timeless and comfortable. Every space we design is influenced by both a site’s aesthetic and our client’s unique personal style. We approach projects by prioritizing function and flow, and select pieces to create a beautiful backdrop for a life well-lived. We believe that the magic is in the mix — opposites attract to make homes come alive.
When is it worth it to invest in interior design services?
We offer professional guidance, help you avoid costly mistakes, and leverage established relationships with a broad variety of trades and vendors. We believe you’ll find our services are worth more than the price you pay.
How do I know which of your services is the best fit?
For full room design for which you’re willing to order the items we specify together, Design Collaboration is a fit. For start-to-finish service and full home design, Full Service Design is the answer.
Either way, the first step in working together is a complimentary call. Contact us and we’ll discuss your project!
Should I show you what I like? What if I don’t know yet?
If you’d like to get a head start on image scouting, use Pinterest to create an inspiration board. To see what we’re pinning, follow us @courtneybsmith. Be forewarned: the rabbit hole is deep.
How long do projects normally last?
It depends on the scope of the project — a few months to a couple of years.
How do you help me visualize a space?
Getting layouts right is a big piece of the puzzle — once those are finalized, we have a list of items we’re looking for to complete the project. We create floor plans for each room and then design boards detailing proposed selections for each item in a space. When you see items on a page together you’ll be able to envision the style and feel of your space and request tweaks to get to your ideal.
How do you source?
Depending on the scope of a project, from a variety of sources — trade-only vendors, retail stores, antique dealers, flea markets, and often clients’ own homes. This “high/low” approach adds interest and helps balance budgets.
Will everything you source be available when we approve it?
There will be times when a selected item becomes unavailable. While this is sometimes a disappointment and inconvenience, we’ll source acceptable replacements.
How are items delivered?
This depends on project scope. With Full Service projects, my recommendation is to perform one installation of all your items. Purchased items go into a warehouse awaiting installation. For Design Collaboration projects, you’re in the driver’s seat and order items for delivery to your home.
Do you work with architects and contractors?
Courtney B. Smith Design does not provide architecture or contractor services. When architecture and/or contractor services are required to complete a project, our clients enter into contract directly with each. We have established relationships with trusted experts with whom we work consistently. We’re pleased to make introductions and to provide consultative services on those aspects of projects.
What is a successful project?
A satisfied client is one whose expectations are surpassed. Our business is built on repeat clients and enthusiastic referrals — our priority is always to create incredible finished spaces and awed clients.
